Bringing Colour Back (Green)

Do you know what I did today? I wore white floral pants to work! Bold. As of today, December 5th, I would like to announce that I am boycotting winter. BOOM. That’s right! Where has the colour gone? Why do I stop wearing bright lipstick when the leaves fall? Why suddenly reach for my black pants, shirt and jacket instead of spunkier options? Spruce it up ladies – from your home to your clothes. I'm bringing colour back!

All these lovely images can be found on my Pinterest. Be sure to follow me by clicking HERE.

Fall Cleaning & Thanksgiving

Today was a gloriously productive day! I went through all my unsorted papers (I’m not proud to say some dated back five years), broke our shredder (that was not the *glorious* part), cleaned the bedroom (because honestly, how many knickknacks does a girl need?), cleaned the kitchen cabinets and cooked those recipes a mere-mortal never has time to cook: scalloped potatoes and stew. I’m on a roll and feeling quite proud with myself!

Fall food is so gorgeous! Check out the following recipes: Sweet Spiced Pumpkin Soup, Crispy Baked Parmesan Green Bean Fries & Nutcrackle, a chewy Nutella cookie. If you like these images, be sure to follow me on Pinterest!

Today is also Canadian Thanksgiving – which is why I have a day off to brag about how productive I am. Saturday and Sunday were spent visiting Hubby and I’s families in Quebec City. I say YAY to good wine, good turkey and relaxing family time. On a day like this, I can’t help but write up a short list of all the things I am thankful for… starting with my loving husband who makes me laugh like no other, my family who goes out of its way to support and encourage my every dream, my friends because they are unbelievably awesome… but then, I’m also thankful for living in a beautiful and peaceful country, for having a roof over my head, having the chance/time/money to visit my family regularly, for being healthy, for working in a field I am passionate about… all in all, I’m pretty darn thankful for this beautiful life! I hope your Monday was equally bright and happy!

My Favourite Colour

Fashionistas worldwide are high-fiving their computer screens, proudly saying “I just knew plum would be a hot trend this fall.” I know, because I’m one of them. We think we are avant-garde, yet we predict the obvious... (SPOILER: I’m telling you NOW, in the fall of 2000-and-a-million, the trend will be... wait for it... jewel tones!) One trend that isn’t so obvious, and that crept up last year after a decade hiatus, is marigold. By far my favourite colour, this golden yellow is a shade to add to your wardrobe, home decor... and even dinner!

Interior Design With no Surprises

Drawings and Photo Realistic Renderings Show Exactly What Your Designer Has in Mind
A Guest Post by Keren Blankrot, Upstage Montreal

In the world of interior design a picture really is worth a thousand words. A client of mine who failed a solo attempt at redesigning her living room confided, “Keren, we made an effort to do this by ourselves, and I know what I like, but I just can’t seem to visualize it in my own space. This is not working for us and we need your help.”

While she put a great deal of thought into the design, and inspiration was not lacking –she has a Pinterest account with plenty of pictures defining her “For the Home” style – she needed a designer to pull it all together, and she benefited greatly from visual aids that allowed her to see the end result beforehand.

Through the wonders of technology, designers can show clients - via perspective drawings, photo realistic renderings, and mood boards - what the end result is meant to look like. These tools are something that I employ regularly. Not only do they establish clarity between the client and the designer in terms of the desired visual aesthetic and goal, they are great for working with clients remotely. For instance, the office drawings pictured below were created for a Manhattan client. All of the items were purchased online, and the installation was carried out with specific direction.

Clients put much trust in their designers and one of the reasons they hire designers is because they covet that designer’s signature aesthetic. As much as a client loves the designer’s taste, however, she is still looking to create a space that reflects her own personal vision and so being able to collaborate with a designer that can show you exactly in what direction they are headed in, with the help of technological tools, is invaluable.

Upstage Montreal works with clients looking to completely update their residential or commercial space, as well as those wishing simply to refresh it. To know more, please visit their website by clicking HERE.

The September Issue

I love Glamour Magazine. And this month, my excitement was even greater than usual when I realized it was time for the most amazing of all issues: the September Issue.

For the magazine’s first ever “full-on fashion issue”, Glamour got the help of Victoria Beckham (by the way, how awesome was it to see the Spice Girls reunited at the London 2012 Closing Ceremonies?).  After a thorough read, I feel ready to make a fashionable transition into fall.

Here are a few things I learned:

  1.  It’s totally OK to wear black at a wedding (not yours!). This is good, since I’m going to one this weekend and was a bit nervous about my black (but oh-so-chic) Calvin Klein dress.
  2.  Necklaces shaped like a fake collar are very trendy these days. Not so sure about that one…I’ll ask Emily to do some research and write a post about it. Stay tuned!
  3. Purple and oxblood (or Chianti, as Glamour prefers to call it) are THE colours of the season.
  4. And, finally, when asked if they would rather have a lifetime supply of Louboutins or one amazing night with Ryan Gosling, 68% of women surveyed by the magazine said they would choose the shoes. I, personally, would pick Ryan (who needs that many Louboutins?)

Love What You Do

If you’re having a case of the Monday blues, this image may bring a smile to your face. I hope that you are all loving what you do and doing what you love.

I’m curious as to what pieces of wisdom you live by...

Life According to my Pinterest

Since Emily often shares with you her latest obsessions in the form of her recent Pinterest posts, I was inspired to do the same. Here’s what I’ve been pinning lately:

My own Freudian analysis of this tells me three things: I love turquoise, I’m craving a little bit of luxury, and I wish I were anywhere but the office – preferably in an exotic location, it seems!

On a side note, I hear that NGOs are starting to use Pinterest as a way of raising awareness for their causes. Have you noticed all the neat infographics that are starting to pop up?

Life According to my Pinterest

What a beautiful day! Don’t you just love the beginning of summer? This month, according to my Pinterest, I’ve been craving all shades of tropical blue. (Talking about blue, I wanted to give a shout out to fellow Montreal blogger, Danina, who rocked a bluey-minty outfit this week. Check it out by clicking HERE!)

Do you have any fun plans this weekend? Hubby and I are looking forward to spending some quality time with our baby niece. She arrived with her mom and dad last night. She’s just a-do-ra-ble! I’ll tell you all about it on Monday, I’m sure! Cheers, Emily xo

The Nautical Look

The weather is finally feeling like summer! I wish I could spend the day at the beach or sailing on the ocean. I need sun! Inspired by THIS image from Pinterest, I present to you two nautical looks which are perfect for our Montreal weather. Both showcase the same 25$ Old Navy shorts, proving yet again that a true fashionista doesn’t need to spend all her savings to look amazing and on trend. Which look do you prefer?
Small bottle of Moet & Chandon / Bobbi Brown Beach Fragrance (this is on my wish list) / Single Digit Tote Bag from Sea Bags (love this eco-friendly company!) / Coriander Ava Silk Shirt by Equipment / Old Navy Shorts / Tory Burch Flip Flops

Major Blouse by Equipment / Old Navy Shorts / Yves Saint-Laurent Rouge Pur Couture in Corail Legende / Capri Cuff by Lauren Elan (read our interview with Lauren by clicking HERE) / Tory Burch Dash Tote / Tory Burch Casey Flat Sandals

Life according to my Pinterest

My addiction to Pinterest continues to grow. The Kikster (who lovingly follows, but refuses to pin) keeps saying “I don’t get it. It just looks messy.” Messy? It a cornucopia of awesomeness! Tell me: what does your Pinterest say about you? Mine shows that I love fashion, have eclectic taste in art, like sweets a little too much, and this week, it’s saying that I’m obsessed with the colour red!

Blogging

A few days ago, PartyMixTape turned four months old. That’s 91 posts and over 11,000 page views. My baby blog is slowly growing up! It’s thrilling to share tidbits about my varied interests. Undoubtedly, one of the very best things about having this blog is reading your lovely comments and gaining like-minded followers. Through these, I have discovered new blogs, facebook pages and Pinterest-addicts.

In the comment section below, please tell us more about your blog and your interests! What are you blogging about? Are there any subjects discussed on PartyMixTape that you would like me to discuss more often? More art? More fashion? More interviews? Let me know and help PartyMixTape grow! (And don’t forget to follow! ...I couldn’t resist the extra rime!) Happy Sunday, E.

All White

After all this talk of colour, I’m taking a breather and presenting you with an all white post. This is in part inspired by the fact that today, at the gallery, we lost electricity. The two and a half hours before closing were spent in the dark, without the clickety-click of a computer keyboard or the ring of a single phone call. Art in the dark... Clearly, this isn’t good for business, but it gave me time to clear my head, write an impressive to-do list, clean my desk and sort my paperwork. (This makes me think of a quote I read recently that said something like “Tidy room, tidy mind.” Blah. I dislike quotes like these because they are a little bit true...) So tell me, how was your day?

Drama, drama

Let’s be honest here: today was a crummy day. My leopard umbrella is in the garbage due to torrential winds; I have a kink in my neck from trying to look over my shoulder while running to catch the bus (which I didn’t catch) and I have a bad-windy-poured-on-hair day. Giant sigh. What is a girl to do? The only logical answer seems to go on a pinning frenzy and wear warm pyjamas. Done and done. May this boost of colour make your day a little brighter!

Safari Chic

When I saw this photograph on Pinterest, it was love. There is something about it that is both carefree and totally unexpected. As summer is fast approaching (or so I tell myself), I know safari chic will make a comeback... it’s one of those trends that has a sneaky way of coming back every year. Below, you’ll see my take on desert fashion. Will you be rocking your cargo pants in 2012?

1. Ollie & Nic Gerry Giraffe Print Scarf (in camel) / 2. Madewell Biltmore straw hat / 3. Michael Kors Oversized Madison Chronograph Watch (Horn) / 4. Equipment blouse, Brett Silver Multi / 5. Yves Saint Laurent Cotton-gabardine trench dress / 6. Quicksilver cargo pants / 7. Michael Kors Open Link Horn Bracelet / 8. Yves Saint Laurent Tribute python sandals / 9. Michael Kors Earrings, Horn Hoop Earrings

Happy Bachelorette, Sue!

This weekend, I am off to my hometown to celebrate with my friend Sue. Along with her twin sister Isa, Sue and I met in kindergarten. I was dubbed “the third twin,” a nickname I adored. On Saturday, we will be celebrating Sue’s bachelorette party. What a milestone! And to think that I had my first sleepover at their home; I participated in my first lip-sync concert with them (a New Kids on the Block cover, of course!); I had my first food fight with them (don’t fight with ketchup, kids); we sang along to the Beatles all through our youth (and still today); they made me watch The Three Amigos too many times, and made me jump in the pool to test out how freezing it was (very, was always the answer). We grew up together. So here’s a post for Sue, in honour of her upcoming Big Day.

Sue, je suis tellement fière de la femme que tu es devenue et de la vie que tu as bâtie. Quel bonheur – quel honneur – d’être encore dans ta vie après 25 ans. Prépare-toi pour une fin de semaine incroyable! Je t'aime!

Minty

Spring has sprung here in Montreal! To celebrate, here are a few cheery images I found on the web this week. I’m loving everything mint! How about you?

Although I’m super excited about wearing shoes instead of boots, a blazer instead of my winter coat, I can’t help but think of our poor Planet Earth…

Guess who's back?

How many times have you thrown something out because it was out of style, only to see it back “in” a few years later? That’s how I feel about neon. As a child of the eighties, I did my generation justice by rocking fluorescent yellows, greens, pinks and blues (probably all at once). I was recently having supper with a gal pal who said: “I can’t believe it’s coming back… How will I ever incorporate this trend in my wardrobe?” Challenge accepted, lady! Here are a few examples of how to rock neon without blinding your friends and coworkers. Want more examples? Check out my post Neon is the new black.

The Comfort Zone

Every day, I am surrounded by bold colours, patterns and textures.  This morning, I woke up longing for a little peace and quiet…  So I dressed in black and white, kept my hair down and ate a grilled cheese for lunch. Ah, the comfort zone…
All images can be found via my Pinterest – feel free to follow me! Do pay special attention to the wonderful astronaut on the first row. I’m in love with Sophie Jodoin’s artwork. In. Love. For all you Montrealers, check out Battat Contemporary ASAP.
